With commencement season now over across Kansas, the state’s colleges and universities are proposing tuition rate increases to the Board of Regents.
Tuition and fee proposals were handed to the board in advance of the Regents’ monthly meeting last week. At Emporia State, the proposed tuition increase is 2.5 percent for undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of whether they qualify for resident or non-resident status. President Allison Garrett says ESU carefully considered the step before making its proposal.
If approved, the resident undergraduate rate would climb from $2,513.50 to $2,577.15 for resident undergraduates and from $3,042 to $3,118.93 for resident graduate students. For non-residents, the tuition rate is set to climb from $9,300 to $9,535.35 for undergraduate students and from $9,462 to $9,701.40 for graduate students.
Fees would increase anywhere from 1.6 percent to 2.4 percent, depending on the student category.
If approved, the almost $700,000 in revenue will address so-called non-discretionary expenses including rate changes for fringe benefits and faculty promotion. Tuition and fee increases come after lawmakers approved an additional $15 million for higher education in a budget ceremonially signed by Gov. Jeff Colyer at Emporia State last week, but Garrett says the revenue from this step would not totally cover cuts of over $800,000 from several years ago.
