Area residents paused to remember those who have fallen protecting our nation during a host of Memorial Day services in the area Monday.
Emporia’s annual service at the All Veterans Memorial was punctuated in part by remarks from retired Col. Roger Donlon, the first Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War. He told the audience the scars of battle aren’t limited to soldiers.
In addition, Gold Star mother Maria Lane read a poem to the gathering. Her son, David, was killed in action in Iraq 11 years ago.
The service closed with a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps. The service also included renditions of the national anthem and pledge of allegiance, prayers and a memorial roll call of local veterans who passed away over the last 12 months.
