The Special Olympics torch is getting closer to its final destination.
The torch left Emporia on its way to El Dorado and, ultimately, Wichita for the annual State Games beginning Friday. Special Olympians participating in the games were greeted with cheers and cowbells as they walked down Commercial Street.
Following the official parade, it was time for Ron’s Ride — KVOE General Manager Ron Thomas’ annual jaunt from Emporia to Olpe. He says the ride went well — and the fundraiser had a lot of community support.
Along with Thomas for the ride were Kent Schnakenberg of Team Schnak and Amanda Gutierrez of the Emporia Recreation Commission. Schnakenberg says he enjoys being part of this event.
Like Schnakenberg, Gutierrez says she enjoys spending time with Special Olympians.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says one of the new features for the activities was a stop at Hetlinger Developmental Services, which helps people with developmental disabilities. He says that will now become an annual tradition.
The State Games will have their opening ceremony Friday evening and continue through Sunday. Click here for KVOE News’ coverage from earlier this week.
