The Dirty Kanza race is off and running, albeit a little late, following a quick series of severe thunderstorms that pushed through early Saturday morning.
DK cofounder Jim Cummins says it was unprecedented territory, as it was the first time weather impacted the start of the race. He also talked about rider safety for those already on the course for the first ever DK XL race, which began Friday.
DK 100 participant Joe Reed says the weather delay only increased the number of butterflies in his stomach ahead of the race.
DK 200 participant Amity Gregg of San Francisco says she’s thrilled to be in Emporia for this year’s race.
Once the weather pushed through, all riders were able to safely get on the road. Westar Energy spokesperson Jana Dawson says crews are also aware of some possible downed power lines adjacent to the DK course.
