The 2018 Dirty Kanza officially wrapped up Sunday morning with the annual awards breakfast.
2,700 riders from around the country packed the Granada to hear the final results of the DK series of races from this weekend. Jim Cummins of DK Promotions tipped his hat to the competitors as well as the city of Emporia for their hospitality throughout the weekend.
Cummins says the atmosphere at the finish line is what gives the competitors the boost they need to complete the challenging rides.
This year’s DK had a host of new additions including the DK XL, a 350-mile ride through the Flint Hills. Of the 34 competitors to take part only 18 were able to finish the grueling challenge that experienced severe weather Saturday evening. Cummins says unexpected complications such as severe weather can be frightening, but it helps make the experience all the more memorable.
42 riders earned their 1,000 miles of Kanza goblets this year having completed the DK five times.
