Last Friday was the deadline for candidates to file for the 2018 election season.
In Lyon County, just a handful of seats are up for grabs, most notably on the Lyon County Commission where Scott Briggs has filed for re-election in the first district but will run unopposed. Chris Keith and Kevin Sorensen are vying for two at-large seats on the Reading Fire District. Elsewhere, Debra Moser is running unopposed for township clerk in Agnes and Mary Lou Pearson is running unopposed for township clerk in Jackson.
Lyon County Election Commissioner Tammy Vopat says there are some deadlines voters should also keep in mind.
Primary elections in Kansas are taking place Aug. 7. There has been no formal petition filed yet to have the Emporia Sunday alcohol sales ordinance challenged during the August primary. A 60-day petition period ends June 23.
Lyon County voters also will have new voting equipment greeting them at the polls this year. Vopat says her staff is getting trained on the new, more secure machines that will be used beginning in August.
Other notable elections this year, at the state level include, Republican incumbent 51st District Representative Ron Highland who is up for re-election and Democrat Noah Wright of Wamego will challenge him.
Republican Mark Schreiber of Emporia is running unopposed for re-election to his 60th District House seat. Republican Eric Smith of Burlington is also up for re-election in the 76th District and is running unopposed.
The governor’s race has 12 candidates on the primary ballot. On the Republican side, the field includes current Gov. Jeff Colyer, Jim Barnett, Kris Kobach, Patrick Kucera, Tyler Ruzich, Ken Selzer and Joseph Tutera Jr. Democratic candidates include Arden Andersen, Jack Bergeson, Carl Brewer, Laura Kelly and Josh Svaty.
