A total of 38 dogs were rescued this week from a home in Olpe, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
After responding to an animal welfare Thursday evening at 10 Center Street in Olpe, one dog was found deceased in a dumpster and one was still alive, but in poor health. Deputies took necessary steps to assure the dog in poor health received proper emergency medical attention at the Emporia Veterinary Hospital. Further investigation led to approximately 37 more dogs living in a home in the area. The owner was contacted and requested assistance to rehome the dogs. Lyon County Sheriff’s Sgt. Doug Stump.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office made contact Friday with Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption with the Animal Justice League of America, based out of Mission, Kansas, to find homes for the dogs. Stump says the agency’s assistance was a major plus for law enforcement.
According to posts on its Facebook page, Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption secured 21 under-socialized dogs and puppies from a “hoarder situation” in Olpe Saturday as well as 17 on Friday. The dogs ranged in ages from puppy to adult and had been living in a trailer without air conditioning or proper care.
The homeowner’s name is not being released at this time. The homeowner at this point is not facing any charges. The investigation continues by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
