A long-time Emporia administrator was recognized recently for exceptional service.
Emporia Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dr. George Abel received the USA-Kansas Outstanding Service Award. The announcement came just weeks before his official retirement, effective at the end of June. He says the award was quite the honor.
Dr. Abel began his teaching career in Emporia before moving to Eudora where he worked for a number of years. Abel returned to Emporia in 1993 and started his administrative career as the Director of Education. He explains his love for his work and why he was able to do it for more than four decades.
Abel says one of the major changes in curriculum during his tenure has been a shift to focus students earlier to career-ready classes.
Abel has been a USA-Kansas member for the last 25 years and is the patriarch for the Kansas Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (KASCD). Dr. Abel will be retiring in the next few weeks after 45 years in education.
