Local flag expert Cleat Buckbee joined KVOE’s Morning Show this week to give a refresher course on flag etiquette.
Thursday is Flag Day, and Buckbee says the proper display of the American flag starts with placing the field of stars in the right spot.
Governors and the President have the authority to change the flag’s position, and when flown at half-staff the flag is first brought to the top of the staff before being repositioned.
When flown alongside other flags, the American flag takes the most prominent position and is flown higher than other flags.
There is also a special procedure for flag disposal.
There is a special mailbox at the American Legion Post No. 5 for proper flag disposal.
Buckbee says there are no set guidelines for flag storage or folding once the flag is inside a home or business.
Buckbee started his research into flag etiquette and flag history 21 years ago under the tutelage of Harry Shook. He’s now been conducting flag etiquette programs for area students the past 15 years.
Flag Day celebrates the adoption of the American flag, which happened June 14, 1777 as an act of the Second Continental Congress.
