After 11 years on the Emporia School Board, Mike Helbert announced last week that he’s calling it quits.
The announcement came as a surprise to some on the school board and in the community but for Helbert, the decision was based on not having enough time to devote to the job as he sees fit.
Helbert’s decision was twofold as he also represents the school board on the Emporia Recreation Commission. But on Monday, with outgoing commissioner Roger Hartsook officially stepping down, Helbert was named to replace Hartsook as the at-large member on the Rec Commission. Helbert explains why he is so passionate to continue serving in that capacity.
As for his colleague on the commission, Helbert says Hartsook has been a valuable asset to the community.
A replacement representative to the ERC will be named by the school board after Helbert’s resignation becomes official July 15.
