The American Legion Post 5 AAA Team began play in the McPherson Tournament Friday.
Post 5 would get the win in their first game of the tournament defeating Hutchinson 11-6. Post 5 put up the first points with two runs in the first inning. Hutchinson would answer with three in the bottom of the first. Kayden Williams would score a single run in the third off a wild pitch to tie the game. Sawyer Slayden would regain the lead for Post 5 in the fifth with an inside the park home run which also saw Hayden Baumwart score from second. Emporia would add five more runs to close out Hutchinson 11-6.
In Game two the Post 5 Seniors would take on the Wichita Aviators in a game that would go to extra innings. Emporia would grab an early lead in the fourth by a score of 8-0. Wichita would score nine runs over the next four innings and Emporia would manage to put up only one tying the game 9-9 at the end of seven. In the eighth Wichita would score four and Emporia would only manage two as Post 5 would fall to the Aviators 13-11.
Coach Anthony Markowitz says his team needed to have a more aggressive approach at the plate.
Post 5 will resume play at the McPherson tournament tomorrow (SAT) against a yet to be determined opponent.
