Emporia Post 5 AAA wrapped the McPherson tournament as champions with three straight wins Saturday.
In their first game Emporia would face the Kansas Senators. Post 5 was first on the board with four runs in the third inning to go ahead 4-0. The Senators would waste no time with a response scoring three in the top of the fourth off a three run homerun. Starting pitcher Cade Kohlmeier would bounce back and close out the inning. Post 5 would score single runs in the fifth and sixth increasing their lead 6-3 to clinch the win. Kohlmeier got the win pitching a complete game giving up only three runs off seven hits with five strikeouts.
In game two of the day Post 5 would close out McPherson in four innings. McPherson would score the first run of the game with a single in the second inning. Emporia would retaliate with seven runs in the bottom of the second and eight in the third to defeat McPherson 15-4. John Miller would lead Post 5 with 4 RBI driving in runs on a triple in the second and a double in the third.
In the championship game Post 5 would find a stiffer matchup with the Salina Falcons. Salina scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning. Emporia would score two in the top of the second and lights out pitching from starter Eric Hertlein would hold Salina scoreless through the rest of the game giving up only three hits with five strikeouts in six and a half innings.
The Post 5 Seniors will return to action Tuesday when they face the Topeka Senators at Soden’s Grove.
