ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting five reporters and a support staffer to death at a newspaper office.
Jarrod Ramos of Laurel, Md., allegedly went to The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, where he shot the quintet and was quickly arrested afterward.
Tom Marquardt, former Capital Gazette editor and publisher, says this continues what has become a dangerous time for journalists in the United States.
Authorities say the shooting was a targeted attack and may have followed a 2011 story about Ramos allegedly stalking another person. Ramos filed a defamation lawsuit after that story was published.
President Donald Trump, who has vilified the media on numerous occasions since taking office, tweeted that his thoughts and prayers were with the victims but did not answer questions afterward, either about the shooting itself or about his rhetoric relating to the media.
