Oppressive heat continues across the KVOE listening area Friday.
High temperatures should top out around 97 degrees in Emporia, very near the 96-degree high temperature logged Thursday. While the air temperature did not reach triple digits as was forecast, the heat index still climbed to 107 — staying there between 3 pm and 5 pm.
Heat advisories and heat warnings continue for the area. Lyon, Coffey and Morris counties remain under a heat advisory until 7 pm Saturday, while the advisory for Chase and Greenwood counties now has been extended to expire at 7 pm Saturday. Osage and Wabaunsee counties are under a heat warning until 7 pm Saturday.
It appears a cool front will end our heat wave Saturday evening by touching off scattered showers and thunderstorms. Currently, there is a marginal risk for severe weather along and north of the Kansas Turnpike and Interstate 35. Heavy rainfall has also been listed as a possibility.
