Life in prison.
That was the sentence handed down Monday for Sony Uk, the Emporia man convicted earlier this year by a jury trial in the March 2017 murder of Mahogany Brooks. Uk, who showed no remorse during the trial for his actions again showed no emotion as the sentence was read in court Monday morning.
Judge Merlin Wheeler applied the hard-50 life sentence, noting that in his nearly 30-year year career he had never seen an act as brutal as the one committed by Uk. During the hearing, Uk was given an opportunity to testify for a lesser sentence but declined. The sentence will be automatically appealed.
In April a 12-person jury found Uk guilty of first-degree murder with intent and premeditation. It was Emporia’s first homicide in nearly four years.
