A reward has been offered for information that could solve the death of an Emporia man this past weekend.
Lyon County Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $1,000 after 21-year-old Jose A. Montes was found on Interstate 35 near the Burlingame Road exit around 2 am Sunday. A semi driver from Texas says he tried to avoid Montes but was unable to do so. Montes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emporia Police is investigating. Authorities have not said whether they believe Montes was alive when he was hit by the truck. They also say they are determining why Montes was on the highway when he was struck.

11:45 am Monday: EPD releases identity of victim found on I-35
Investigations continue after a man was found dead on Interstate 35 this past weekend, and Emporia Police have essentially released a progress report for their inquiries.
Capt. Dave DeVries says 21-year-old Jose A. Montes was the person reported as found dead on Interstate 35 near the Burlingame Road exit. Montes was found after a northbound semi driven by 47-year-old Dewaine Jackson of Amarillo, Texas, was approaching the exit around 2 am. Jackson saw Montes and tried unsuccessfully to avoid him.
Montes was pronounced dead at the scene.
DeVries says detectives are working to determine why Montes was on the highway when he was hit. Further details are currently pending.

What began as an injury crash call in northeast Emporia has now led to the death of one man as discovered early Sunday.
Emporia Police Sgt. Lisa Sage has confirmed the death of a man on Interstate 35. Several detectives are now assigned to the case.
The death follows an injury accident call to Lyon County Dispatch just after 2 am to Interstate 35 at Burlingame Road. The death is apparently connected to the crash call, but the exact details are under development at this time. Emporia Police are not offering any additional comment at this time on the number or types of vehicles involved or the names of the people involved.
Lyon County deputies, meanwhile, are leading an apparently related investigation after a passenger car crashed into an Emporia Police SUV.

10:30 am Sunday: Two investigations now linked to early Sunday crash on I-35
Investigations continue after a complicated crash scene developed on Emporia’s northern edge early Sunday.
Emporia Police is leading one investigation after a wreck developed on Interstate 35 northbound near the Burlingame Road overpass shortly after 2 am. Currently, there is no official word on the number or type of vehicles involved, how that crash developed or the names of the people involved.
Lyon County deputies, meanwhile, are leading an apparently related investigation after a small passenger car rear-ended an Emporia Police SUV, expanding the investigation area several hundred feet to the west of the overpass.
Initially, an injury crash was reported. Emporia Fire did not transport anybody to a hospital afterward. Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane for well over an hour during the early part of the investigation.

3:30 am Sunday: Authorities investigating after injury crash report
Local authorities have had an involved crash scene to investigate since early Sunday morning.
Emporia Police and Emporia Fire were called out to the Interstate 35 Burlingame Road exit around 2 am for a reported injury crash headed northbound. Details at this time are unclear, but there were apparently two crashes in the vicinity, including one where a small passenger car rear-ended an Emporia Police SUV after the initial wreck.
Emporia Police, Emporia Fire, ESU Police and Safety and Lyon County deputies have been either investigating the crashes or directing traffic, which was down to one lane along and near the overpass. All additional details are currently pending.
