A record number of Kansans are expected to take part in Fourth of July road trips this week, and AAA Kansas is offering advice to cut down on gas prices.
AAA anticipates roughly 40 million travellers will be on the roadways this week for Fourth of July festivities. With gas prices sitting at $2.65 currently, 60 cents lower than last year, Kansans are expected to make up a large portion of those travelling.
AAA Kansas Spokesperson Jennifer Haugh says with those record numbers vigilance on the roadway will be more crucial than ever.
While gas prices are seven cents lower than memorial day weekend, Haugh explains there are numerous factors that can cause those costs to add up, specifically inadequate tire pressure.
Other ways to preserve gas include observing the speed limit, not weighing down your vehicle with unnecessary luggage, avoiding jackrabbit starts by accelerating gradually and driving during cooler times of the day. Also be sure to have car batteries, especially those over three years old, tested and replaced if necessary to avoid breakdowns on the road.
Travellers should also note that the increase in travel will cause congestion in roadways. Motorists are advised to avoid peak travel hours, such as lunchtime and the end of the workday, and search out alternative routes.
