A grand slam by Yan Gomes powered the Cleveland Indians past the Kansas City Royals 6-4 Tuesday night.
The Royals built a 4-2 lead scoring 2 runs in the first on a Lucas Duda 2 run home run. The Royals added 2 more runs in the 2nd inning on a single by Whit Merrifield and a double by Rosell Herrera. Yan Gomes grand slam came in the 6th inning off of Danny Duffy.
The Royals have lost their last 5 games and are 22.5 games back of first place Cleveland. Royals Manager Ned Yost says they are struggling covering mistakes.
The Royals wrap up their 3 game series with Cleveland Wednesday night. Ian Kennedy was scheduled to make the start but has been placed on the 10 day disabled list with an oblique strain. Wednesdays starter is yet to be announced by the Royals. First pitch is set for 7:15p. Coverage on KVOE 1400AM/96.9FM begins at 6:30p.
The Royals signed their number 1 draft pick right-handed pitcher Brady Singer, the 18th pick overall, Tuesday.
Singer was the fifth-best prospect available in the draft, according to rankings published by Baseball America last month. At the University of Florida, he posted a 3.22 ERA over three seasons and 60 appearances and helped the Gators win a national championship in 2017. Singer was named the 2018 Dick Howser Trophy recipient as well as Baseball America College Player of the Year this season. He receives a $4.25 million dollar signing bonus.
The Royals also agreed to terms with Eric Cole, an outfielder from Arkansas, their 7th pick in the draft. The Royals have now signed their top 17 picks and 33 of their 43 selections.
