The city of Overbrook is discussing its tethering policy after a dog was found dead while tethered recently.
Police Chief Terry Hollingsworth says he took a call from a resident about a dead dog last Thursday. Officers confirmed that situation shortly thereafter.
Hollingsworth says the dog had apparently been the subject of several calls from concerned residents, especially over the past winter when concerns were raised about the dog possibly not being properly fed or watered. Officers investigated several times, including surprise checks, but the dog looked to be properly cared for each time.
Authorities are not specifying who owned the dog.
Hollingsworth says the city is working to revamp its overall animal ordinance. The goal will be to “force accountability” for pet owners while ending some of the town’s current restrictions on officers trying to investigate pet neglect. City Clerk Jim Koger says updates have been discussed for about a year, and another update — including the prospect of a new tethering policy — is coming June 11. Tethering policy is not currently included in Overbrook’s animal ordinance.
