Following an unusually high volume of injury accidents in and around Lyon County Thursday, area law enforcement officers are reminding the public to eliminate distractions and drive safely.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says good weather often makes drivers more comfortable and perhaps less aware of their surroundings.
Emporia and Lyon County rescue workers responded to five separate injury accidents in and around Emporia Thursday, including three that required patient transports to the hospital. Two of the crashes involved people on bikes. Koelsch says there are things drivers and cyclists need to keep in mind.
Traffic laws apply to motorists behind the wheel just the same as those on bicycles. Koelsch adds that anytime there are that many accidents in one day, it does put a stress on emergency services.
Motorists should use extra caution especially this weekend with good weather and with more people may be on the road following the 4th of July holiday.
