Road debris was the apparent reason for a crash near Scranton that hurt two Emporia residents Sunday.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says a pickup truck driven by 36-year-old Brian Kenneth Penn was officially eastbound on US Highway 56, but it was actually less than a football field north of the junction with West 173rd when the crash happened around noon. The truck hit the unknown debris and lost control, going off the highway and rolling 1.5 times.
Penn and a passenger, 36-year-old Jennifer Lea Lindsey of Emporia, were both taken to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka afterward. Neither are listed at the hospital as of Sunday evening. A third Emporian, 24-year-old James Lee McBroom, was not hurt.
The crash happened around noon. The Highway Patrol online crash log report does not say whether any of the three in the truck were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck.
