COTTONWOOD FALLS — USD 284 Chase County is moving past a couple hiccups with ongoing renovations to its facilities.
Superintendent Jeff Kohlman, a KVOE Newsmaker guest this week, says some asbestos was discovered during recent renovations.
Kohlman says asbestos findings are really nothing out of the ordinary, especially given the age of the two buildings, and in this case it simply slowed down the process “a few days.”
Remodeling continues for all classrooms, both at the elementary and junior-senior high schools.
Much of the work will be done by the time students return to class in about a month, but work overall will continue into next year. Kohlman says the renovations — which became the district’s course of action after a new K-12 facility bond was turned down earlier this decade — will help USD 284 be much more energy-efficient than it has been in years past. The work also helps the learning atmosphere at both buildings, and he believes the renovations can be a recruiting tool to bring more students to Chase County.
