Emporia and Lyon County Commissioners sat down to their quarterly luncheon Wednesday afternoon with water dominating much of the conversation.
With the one year anniversary of last year’s significant water main break coming up Friday, city and county commissioners praised the work of Public Works officials to make improvements. Mayor Danny Giefer says that was notable with a break on a 20-inch line just this week.
In addition to city water improvements, both sides also talked about the ongoing drought and what steps need to be taken in the event of water restrictions. City Manager Mark McAnarney says a plan is in place similar to what occurred with the last major drought in 2012 and 2013, should that become necessary. The levels at Council Grove Lake are not as low as they were at that time. Lyon County Commission Chair Rollie Martin says at this point the situation does not warrant water restrictions.
Also discussed was an update on the Joint Comprehensive Plan. Lyon County Planning and Zoning Director Sam Seeley advised that the contracts are being signed for zoning updates now. He anticipates Nov. 1 that a workshop will take place to go over the new zoning codes with a complete finalization by Christmas 2019.
The city and county rotate hosting quarterly meetings. The next meeting is scheduled for early September.
