Should colleges and universities allow in-state tuition rates for undocumented students? On KVOE’s On-Air Chat this week, Emporia State University Vice President for Outreach and Engagement Tyler Curtis emphatically said yes.
Curtis told KVOE listeners this week undocumented students have to meet several different criteria before they can take advantage of the in-state rates.
Undocumented students may have the in-state tuition rate available, but Curtis says they are not eligible for federal student aid and as such have to pay their own way through college.
Curtis’ comments came shortly before Republican gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach said taxpayers pick up two-thirds of the education costs and universities have to pick up related costs like faculty or other resources to handle the student load as part of an interview with KVOE News. Curtis said that was wrong.
Curtis says students, undocumented or not, need education to improve their chances for a better life. He also said that undocumented students who have demonstrated success in high school and college could well be some of America’s best citizens in the future.
