Scammers continue their attempts to rip off local residents and are taking things up a notch.
Recently KVOE has reported on the latest version of scams affecting Westar Energy Customers, and it appears the scammers are now posing as representatives of the Social Security Administration and the IRS. The scammers tell residents they have unpaid bills or taxes and request they pay a certain amount of money in untraceable money orders or their services and assets will be suspended.
The Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office has had multiple reports from residents and were recently contacted by scammers as well. Sheriff Rob Hoskins reminds residents to not give out any personal information over the phone.
Numbers that have been used by scammers include 785-329-2265. If you receive a suspicious call from an unknown number, don’t engage the caller. Instead, check your records and contact your local company with questions and report it to authorities.
