Republican gubernatorial candidate and former state senator Jim Barnett picked up another key endorsement Monday for his campaign ahead of the Aug. 7 primary.
Barnett has been endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers-Kansas, a consortium of employee groups of teachers, nurses and workers in higher education from each of the state’s 105 counties. Barnett, a former Emporia School Board member says the endorsement is key as the next governor needs to keep a focus on teachers.
Barnett says his most enjoyable time in public service was as a school board member because of his time to work alongside teachers. Barnett says his campaign is building momentum as the more moderate option in the race.
Barnett says his opponents (Gov. Jeff Colyer and Kris Kobach) have spent more time accusing each other of lying and crawling over each other to appear the most pro-gun, pro-life and anti-immigrant candidate. Barnett even dismissed the NRA’s F-rating handed down to him last week.
Barnett earlier this month also received an endorsement from former state representative Jim Lowther of Emporia.
