Emporia School Board members spent a majority of Wednesday evening’s meeting reviewing its board goals.
USD 253 Superintendent Kevin Case facilitated the conversation pairing board members and cabinet members into two groups. The focus was to gain a better understanding of the board’s guiding principles with the hope of moving closer to a finalized plan. Case says he was pleased with the progress made in their conversations.
Board and cabinet members discussed prioritizing its13 guiding principles, identifying the core principles and how they apply them to students, staff and community. Both short and long-term goals are being assessed. Case says relationships and integrity stood out as the underlying important goals to tackle first. Cabinet members will meet with Kansas Association of School Boards Deputy Director Doug Moeckel (MECK-el) on Monday to provide feedback from Wednesday’s meeting with conversation to pick back up in a study session at the Aug. 8 board meeting.
The district’s needs assessment update was also discussed. Assistant Superintendent of Business Rob Scheib says they’ve narrowed their search for a construction manager-at-risk from 10 construction firms down to four.
Architectural firm HTK is in the process of completing building visits and expects to complete that process by Aug. 1 and will share findings with the board at the Sept. 12 meeting.
In other business Wednesday, the school board approved a resolution to publish the board’s vacancy in the Emporia Gazette due to the resignation of Mike Helbert earlier this month. The board will consider filling that spot at a later date.
