Drought conditions are worsening just northwest of Emporia.
Exceptional drought, the worst level on the US Drought Monitor’s scale, now has expanded slightly south and covers the US Highway 56 corridor west of Admire. Parts of Morris and Wabaunsee counties are also involved.
Extreme drought essentially surrounds that area and extends south to US Highway 50 and Interstate 35. Moderate drought then stretches across parts of Lyon and Chase counties as well as most of Coffey or Osage counties. Abnormally dry conditions cover most of Greenwood County and far southwest Chase County.
The Central Plains have largely been stuck in a pattern where a ridge of high pressure to our west has blocked any major moisture. National Weather Service meteorologist Kyle Poage doesn’t expect any major changes any time soon.
KVOE News has been running an on-air and online series this week highlighting the drought’s impact on north Lyon County. Click here for a link to those stories.
