Cyclists are gearing up for a night ride through the gravel of the Flint Hills this weekend.
The fifth annual Lunar Kanza kicks off Saturday, with riders launching from Gravel City Adventure & Supply Co., at 716 Commercial. Participation is expected to be record-setting this year, and Dirty Kanza Operations Manager LeLan Dains talked to KVOE about what is drawing people to the sport.
Dains says the Lunar Kanza sets itself apart from the Dirty Kanza by being comparatively smaller and non-competitive, giving the ride a very relaxed atmosphere.
This year is premiering a new route through Americus and around Kahola Lake, an optional competitive challenge through the Strava app, and a scavenger hunt on the track.
Riders launch at 6 p.m., while runners launch at 8:30 p.m. The Lunar Kanza Celebration will start at the same time in the parking lot behind Gravel City. Riders and runners can still sign up day of at Gravel City.
