A proposed multimillion-dollar redevelopment and development project downtown could likely have some impact on downtown parking.
Emporia Main Street and Haag Development announced a $6.5 million private investment to transform the former Bank of America building at 527 Commercial into a mixed-use commercial and residential building alongside a three-story Preston Plaza and Lofts building where the former bank’s drive-thru now sits. City Commissioner Rob Gilligan says it will be the city’s job next to have conversations about possible adjustments to parking in the future.
Those conversations likely are going to involve nearby business owners, residents and any other interested parties. The lot at the southeast corner of Sixth and Merchant Street is one of the busiest parking lots in downtown. Gilligan says adding parking stalls is always a difficult thing and explains why a downtown parking garage wouldn’t be feasible.
A memorandum of understanding will be reviewed at the city commission’s next study session Aug. 8.
