Emporia’s Animal Shelter is as full as it can get.
Shelter staff are taking the unwanted step of taking incoming dogs and cats. On KVOE’s Morning Show this week, Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Judy Dieker encouraged people who may be missing their pets to stop by the shelter at 1216 Hatcher.
Incoming Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Caitlin Flood says this is a tough time for animals needing shelter, and it’s a tough time for everybody associated with the facility.
To adopt, there is a $20 fee for adult cats, kittens and adult dogs, with a $75 fee for puppies and purebreds, regardless of age. A $130 deposit for dogs and $55 for cats is also needed, but that is returned once pets are spayed or neutered. There is also an overnight wait period before a pet can go to its new home.
Dieker and Flood, who will become the Humane Society’s director when Dieker retires next month, both encourage residents to be part of the shelter’s foster pet parent program as well. This involves providing a safe, clean environment, plus food and supplies, as shelter and Humane Society staff work to find a permanent home for the pet.
