With election day just a week away, many people across Kansas are focused on the primary election for governor. However, area county officials remind residents there are other races on the ballot to keep in mind.
Across the KVOE listening area, the number of contested races at the city or county level is extremely low. In Coffey County, the race for County Commissioner in District 1 is ongoing with three Republican candidates on the primary ballot for August 7. The candidates include incumbent Jim Dale and challengers Tom Hugunin and Don Ulrich, all of Burlington.
As KVOE News has told you for several months, the question in Lyon County is whether Emporia should have Sunday liquor sales. Emporia voters turned down Sunday sales about a decade ago, but other nearby communities — including Americus, Lebo, Lyndon, Olpe and Osage City — approved policies letting liquor stores, convenience stores and grocery stores sell alcohol on Sundays. Go to the KVOE.com news page to participate in our current poll on whether Emporia should allow Sunday sales.
Lyon County does not have any contested races at the city or county government level, and no school board positions are up for election this year.
Advance voting ends at noon Monday. The primary election will be held Aug. 7, and KVOE News will have full coverage of the election after the polls close at 7 pm that evening.
