CHANUTE — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is unspooling an incident from Chanute that apparently involved a man stealing an ambulance before being shot by law enforcement.
The KBI says Chanute Police asked for KBI help Saturday to investigate a shooting. Early indications are Chanute officers responded to a disturbance at a store and came upon a man who was behaving erratically. Officers asked EMS to evaluate the man, but he then jumped inside the ambulance on scene, locked the doors and drove away. An officer then fired several times at the ambulance and a short chase developed.
The suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Trevor Jones of the Chanute area, was later treated in Chanute for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and later transferred to an unnamed Wichita hospital. No law enforcement was hurt in this incident.
An investigation is ongoing.
