When Emporia State University students return to classes later this month, a noticeable change will greet them on the southeast side of campus.
Schallenkamp Hall, the new ESU residence hall under construction along Market Street, is starting to come together about one year ahead of the proposed open date. Director of Residence Life Cass Coughlin tells KVOE News, all interior walls are pretty well constructed.
As bad as the drought has been for most residents, it’s actually been beneficial for the project staying on schedule. The residence hall should be ready for students to move in by August 2019 and Coughlin says they hope to start taking applications to move in by this fall.
Students will move into the 91,000 square foot Schallenkamp Hall beginning in August 2019, however, the building will not be rented out for summer camps in either 2019 or 2020. Once completed it will house 324 ESU students. Tours of the residence hall won’t be happening anytime soon until the project is a little further in construction.
Beginning this fall students will be able to provide input on what kind of furniture they’d like to see put into the new residence hall. Coughlin also says the schematic design phase is nearing completion on the future renovation of Abigail Morse Hall, ESU’s first dorm that’s been in use since 1924.
Renderings of future plans to renovate Abigail Morse Hall will likely be released in the fall.
