An Emporia woman was arrested after a chase Friday, and Emporia Police are looking for a second person believed to be part of the incident.
Capt. Dave DeVries says the incident apparently started in the 1800 block of Meadowlark when an Emporia Police officer saw an individual who may have had a warrant with a white SUV trailing him. The officer turned around to contact the man and was able to do so, even though authorities believe the SUV driver may have been trying to block the way. There was a physical struggle but the suspect broke away and fled, with the officer reporting the suspect jumping into the SUV.
A chase developed from there and eventually got to the Hartford area. The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Samantha Scheve, got away briefly several times, but law enforcement was able to put stop sticks down effectively outside Hartford and bring the SUV to a stop. The man who allegedly jumped in, however, was not in the vehicle when the SUV was stopped and authorities believe he may have got on out at some point.
Scheve was jailed in Emporia. Formal charges are pending.
Emporia Police, Lyon County deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol were involved in the chase.
12:15 pm Friday: One person arrested after chase from Emporia to Hartford
Emporia Police are leading an investigation after a pursuit began in Emporia and ended with an arrest near Hartford on Friday.
Details about how the chase started have not been released, but early indications are the chase went from northwest Emporia west of town before reversing course and heading east, eventually coming to a stop in the 1100 block of W about 1.5 miles west of Hartford when the SUV ran over stop sticks.
One woman was arrested afterward. Her name has not been released.
Lyon County deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol were involved in the chase. Coffey County deputies were alerted but did not need to respond.
Emporia Police have not confirmed whether suspicious activity in the 1700 block of Luther, which developed shortly after the chase moved past that immediate area, was connected in some way.
