No victory speeches are coming yet from either of the Republican gubernatorial candidates in a race deemed “too close to call.”
Secretary of State Kris Kobach who leads Gov. Jeff Colyer by a margin of 191 votes told supporters at a news conference Wednesday that he has a “tentative victory” in the race and says he’s beginning a campaign toward the general election knowing full well it could be he or his opponent moving on once provisional ballots are counted.
Kobach says no matter the outcome, unity is the most important aspect for the Republican party to prevail in November. Kobach says even if Colyer advances he will rally behind him. Colyer echoed unity comments at a news conference Wednesday afternoon and says at this point he’s confident in his chances.
Colyer says he will wait to continue his campaign for the general election until the final votes are counted and says he looks forward to working with Kobach through the process.
Results from provisional ballots won’t be released for at least another week and Kobach urged the Republican party to not stand still during that time to avoid giving opponents the upper hand in the race.
Kobach or Colyer will take on Democrat Laura Kelly and Independent Greg Orman in the general election Nov. 6.
