An Emporia High School student recently joined close to 300 students at the Kansas Association for Youth Leadership Camp at Rock Springs 4-H Center in Junction City in late July.
Junior Alejandrina Herrarte is the director of communication and technology at the Emporia High club and says her experience from camp has inspired her to be a leader in her school and community, following the camp’s theme of “building dreams.”
Kansas Association for Youth (or KAY club) is relatively new to Emporia High School in its second year. Club advisor and Emporia High French and English teacher Amanda Mendoza says the goal is for students to enjoy giving back.
The club works tirelessly on a variety of service projects year round. Alejandrina says she’s hopeful to get the club’s name out there more.
One of the club’s goals is beautification. Mendoza says students have spent time this week at Emporia Middle School working to achieve that goal.
KAY Club is looking for sponsorships to send more youths to camp. Those interested can contact Emporia High School for more information. Herrarte’s story was the subject of KVOE’s Feel Good Friday on Aug. 10.
