One of two defendants charged in connection to the Aug. 3 chase from Emporia to Hartford made his first appearance in Lyon County District Court Monday afternoon.
Ethan Peterson, 23, is charged with multiple counts including possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute which carries a maximum penalty of 144 months in prison and up a $500,000 fine. He’s also charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and interfering with a law enforcement officer. Judge Doug Jones appointed Emporia attorney Don Lill as Peterson’s legal counsel. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 29. He remains jailed on a $25,000 bond.
Peterson was arrested Aug. 8 at 316 Exchange Street after eluding law enforcement for several days following a chase involving 23-year-old Samantha Scheve. It is believed Peterson got into and out of the SUV that was chased during that incident, eluding law enforcement. When he was arrested, Emporia Police and Lyon County deputies seized more than 16 grams of methamphetamine, two cell phones and a duffle bag containing drug paraphernalia.
Scheve meanwhile is awaiting a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Aug. 22.
