Scammers continue to sink to new lows in attempts to con local residents.
Local authorities have received several reports from community members of being contacted by individuals identifying themselves as police officers or sheriff’s deputies. According to reports, scammers are leaving messages claiming the resident has one or multiple warrants and will be arrested if they do not call back within a specific time frame.
Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says this is never the way warrants are issued.
The Emporia Police Department released a public statement on their Facebook page stating, “if you have a warrant we will come and find you.”
Cope also made a point that anyone engaging in activities such as this could be found guilty of a host of offenses including impersonating a law enforcement officer, fraud and illegal use of a telecommunication device. If found guilty offenses such as these could carry a penalty of up to a year in jail.
Residents have reported 620-323-5416 and 323-639-7738 as numbers associated with this activity. If you receive calls from this number or other numbers claiming to be law enforcement officers hang up immediately and contact your local law enforcement agency.
