Earlier this month Emporia voters approved Sunday alcohol sales, but it wasn’t exactly clear when that could begin.
Late Friday afternoon, the City of Emporia announced that beginning this Sunday, Aug. 19, Sunday alcohol and cereal malt beverage retail sales can begin within the city limits. The city couldn’t permit Sunday sales until the votes from the primary election were certified. Retail sales will go from noon to 8 p.m. every Sunday. There are some exceptions however. No cereal malt beverage may be sold at retail stores on Easter. No alcohol liquor may be sold at retail stores on Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. Anyone who has further questions can contact the City Manager’s Office at 620-343-4250.
On Aug. 7, Emporia voters approved Sunday sales by a nearly 6-to-4 margin. Emporia joins Americus, Lebo, Lyndon, Olpe and Osage City as other areawide cities that allow Sunday sales.
Liquor stores can participate in Sunday sales at their discretion. In addition to Sunday, alcohol sales are permitted Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and cereal malt beverages can be sold Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to midnight.
