Residents and businesses in west central Emporia have had to contend with water main breaks this weekend.
Public Works Director Frank Abart says water a pair of 12-inch mains failed, one under Elm at Sixth and one at Fifth just west of Chestnut. Underground Utilities crews have excavated the area immediately around both breakage points and they have restored water service to the affected areas. Permanent street repairs may take place over the next week.
Emporia had 21 water main breaks in July, the highest monthly total since Public Works began keeping records in 2012 and more than double the July 2017 total of 10. Information about the number of August water main failures is not immediately available.
