The former pool at Peter Pan Park may take on a new life with a new use.
On Tuesday night, members of the Emporia-Lyon County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission have recommended a minor plat to the city of Emporia for the area officially listed at 302 South Congress, or the southeast corner of South Congress and Kansas Avenue. City Planning Specialist Joe Foster says the city has received a grant opportunity for a three-lot subdivision that could involve single-family homes.
The city’s pool used to be at the intersection but it has been vacant for several decades. Re-zoning from public to low-density residential would be a corresponding move if city commissioners approve.
Also Tuesday, the city-county Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance request from Michael Fries and FN Group to put a Scooter’s Coffeehouse just south of the Burger King at 18th and Industrial Road. Developers want to build the restaurant 70 feet from the Industrial Road center line, 30 feet less than current city guidelines and over 50 feet closer to the center line than Burger King and Walgreen’s when those businesses built their stores.
