With the classrooms of USD 253 full once again, fridges across the district are stocked up to feed the masses.
Food Service Director Denise Kater was a recent guest on the Emporia Showcase Tuesday and shared what a typical delivery day is like for the district.
Applications are currently available for students or households requiring free or reduced lunch prices. Kater says they accept applications at any time, and it is completely confidential.
The district provides an abundance of options for meals at each school including a fresh fruit and veggies bar in elementary schools and a salad bar at Emporia High School and Emporia Middle School.
Currently, the food service department has around 59 workers across the district. Kater reports last year alone the served 465,743 lunches and 195,753 breakfasts.
