The Emporia State Cross Country team will be holding an Alumni run and Hall of Fame induction Sunday. The run begins at 9am at Jones Park.
Coach Mark Stanbrough says the public is encouraged to participate.
The 1958 team was the first of 5 team National Championships. The Hall of Fame Inductions will be held beginning at 12:15 in the Skyline Room in the Memorial Union. The inaugural class of inductees is made up of nine men and two women that earned multiple All-American honors. As a group they have 28 All-American honors and won six individual national championships in cross country.
There are 5 teams that won National Championships, the first came in 1958. The public is invited to attend. No reservations are needed.
Hall of Honor Inductees:
John Camien was a three-time national champion and four time All-American for the Hornets. He won the 1963 and 1964 NAIA Individual National Championship as well as the 1963 NCAA College Division title while earning All-American honors from 1961-64.
Dennis Matheson was a three-time NAIA All-American from 1958-60.
Jermaine Mitchell was the first NCAA Division II All-American for Emporia State, earning the honor in 1993, 1994 and 1996.
Greg Purkeypile earned back to back NAIA All-American honors in 1975-76.
Jonel Rossbach was a the last Hornet to earn All-American honors, picking up NCAA Division II honors in 2006-07 for the Emporia State women.
Ireland Sloan was the 1962 NAIA national champion and was a 1962 and 1963 All-American for the Hornets.
Bill Tidwell was a three-time All-American from 1954-56 in cross country.
Paul Whiteley earned All-American honors in 1958 and 1959 as he won the NCAA College Division national championship each year.
Warner Wirta was an All-American for Emporia State in 1958-59.
Richard Woelk was a three-time All-American, earning the honor from 1961-63.
Lesha Wood was the first multiple All-American for the Emporia State women, earning back to back honors in 1980-81.
