Sertoma Club of Emporia engineered a birthday bash Saturday evening celebrating 60 years of its miniature train.
Soden’s Grove was packed with families taking advantage of free train rides, face painting, carnival-style games, balloons and lots of free food. Sertoma Club member and organizer Terri Summey says they didn’t know what the party would be like but was thrilled by the massive turnout.
Free will donations were accepted throughout the event. Organizer Bill Huth says they wanted to keep things free of charge as a way to give back, and they had a lot of help.
The Sertoma Club gives scholarships to the Emporia State University School of Nursing as well as Flint Hills Technical College and is heavily involved in community events throughout the year.
