Local law enforcement officials have been busy this past week keeping tabs on school zones in Emporia.
Emporia Police and Lyon County deputies have issued nearly 70 traffic stops already since school began Aug. 22. Sgt. Lisa Sage was a guest on KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 program Tuesday and urged some friendly school zone driving tips.
Many of those traffic stops involved drivers speeding in school zones. Sage says drivers need to heed more caution but says pedestrians also should be more aware of their surroundings.
It is illegal for drivers to go around a school bus that is loading and unloading. Fines for speeding and other traffic violations in school zones are doubled.
