The Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-2 Wednesday afternoon to complete a sweep of a 2 game series.
The Royals scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning on a Adalberto Mondesi 2 run home run.
Alex Gordon hit a 2 run home run in the 3rd inning. Gordon’s home run was his 10th this season and 170th of his career, surpassing Hal McRae. George Brett (317) is the all-time leader, followed by Mike Sweeney (197) and Amos Otis (193).
The Royals scored 3 runs in the 4th inning, Mondesi tripled, Brett Phillips and Drew Butera doubled driving in runs.
In the 5th Mondesi walked with the bases loaded and Brett Phillips hit a sacrifice fly.
Danny Duffy was the winning pitcher going 6 innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits with 6 strikeouts. The Royals are off tomorrow, they being a 3 game series with Baltimore Friday night.
After the game The Royals traded first baseman Lucas Duda to the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations.
Duda signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal to take over for departed first baseman Eric Hosmer this season. Duda hit just .242 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs while appeared in 87 games, making his trade somewhat imminent.
He heads from a last-place team in Kansas City to a first-place team in Atlanta.
