The Emporia State football team opened the 2018 season with a 34-7 win over Northeastern State Thursday night.
Head Coach Garin Higgins was happy to get the win.
The Hornets jumped out to a 13-0 lead by the end of the first quarter on a 21 yard Braxton Marstall to Tyler Harris touchdown pass. Landon Nault would score on a 1 yard run on 4th down.
Northeastern scored their touchdown with 3:17 to play in the first half, a 37 yard scoring pass from Cade Yeager to Rhyheem Brummitt.
In the third quarter the Hornets scored 21 unanswered points. Tyler Harris caught a 13 yard touchdown pass. Landon Nault scored on a 2 yard run and Braxton Marstall scored on a 4 yard quarterback sneak.
The Hornets came up with 4 fumble recoveries. The defense held Northeastern to 14 yards rushing and had 6 quarterback sacks. Parker Bass had 3 and half sacks on the night.
Emporia State finished with 237 rushing yards and 144 passing yards.
With the win Emporia State Coach Garin Higgins ties Larry Kramer for 2nd place for most wins by a coach in Emporia State History.
The Hornets will host Pittsburg State next Thursday night.
