Kansas Congressman Roger Marshall stopped in Emporia for what he called a Community Coffee on Wednesday.
Close to 30 people went to the Emporia Arts Center to hear Marshall’s views on nationwide topics affecting Kansans. Marshall touted the House version of the Farm Bill, especially for what he says it offers for ag producers.
Some in the audience weren’t so sure, especially when it came to the SNAP benefits commonly known as food stamps. Marshall fielded several pointed questions about the expanded work requirements, calling them punitive. Marshall said he understood the concerns but said work requirements are needed for those federal benefits.
Marshall’s opponent, Alan LaPolice, was in town Monday evening.
Earlier this week, LaPolice criticized Marshall for not debating him. That has changed. KWCH will have a televised debate between the two candidates Oct. 16.
Marshall’s appearance in Emporia comes near the end of his scheduled coffees, with one more planned Saturday. Before the Emporia stop, he also made visits to White City and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.
