Turnovers cost the Emporia High football team in a 28-24 loss to Washburn Rural Friday night.
The Spartans turned the ball over on 3 straight possessions in the 3rd quarter. Rural would score 2 touchdowns off those turnovers. Emporia High scored on their first drive, John Miller capped off a 74 yard drive with a 1 yard run. The game was tied at 7 going to the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd quarter Emporia High quarterback Jace Stewart connected with Charles Snyder on a 7 yard pass and kicked a 30 yard field goal to give the Spartans a 16-7 lead at halftime. Washburn Rural scored 2 touchdowns set up by turnovers in the 3rd quarter to take a 21-16 lead going to the 4th quarter. Emporia High retook the lead in the 4th quarter on a Gabe Galindo 13 yard touchdown run. Rural would re-take the lead with 1:27 to play. The Spartans put together a drive getting to the Rural 9 yard line. They had 4 chances to win in the final 17 seconds. 4 incomplete passes ended the game. Coach Corby Milleson they made to many costly mistakes.
The Spartans travel to Topeka to face Topeka West next Friday.
